NEWS ABOUT THE SC CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESPONSE SYSTEM
As part of a Duke Grant partnership between the SC Collaborative of Children’s
Hospitals and the Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers and under the able
direction of Dr. Olga Rosa, the new Children’s Medical Response system is
gaining momentum.
Medical Providers have been meeting and have developed
guidelines for the medical assessment of children suspected of being abused or
neglected, including acute and non-acute sexual abuse and all clinical
manifestations of physical abuse.
In addition they have revised the Child Maltreatment
Protocol to reflect evidence based medicine and developed qualification
standards for: Child Abuse Medical Providers, Child Abuse Pediatrics Medical
Specialists, and Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Practitioners. These guidelines
include training, ongoing education and peer review.
Dr. Rosa has assisted in the drafting of a legislative
bill to create the South Carolina Child Abuse and Neglect Services Fund to
support the provision of medical services through CAC’s.
